Last week, we told you about several regions in Ukraine that were voting on a referendum to possibly leave Ukraine and join Russia. The voting took place over a period of four days- and now the results are in.
The Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republic, along with the Kerson region and part of the Zaporizhzhia area of southern Ukraine have voted to *join* Russia. And the vote wasn’t even close. In some areas, 99 percent of voters supported the move.
The lowest percentage was 87 percent. The process of integrating new regions into Russia may take some time as it requires the approval of the country’s parliament and the president. This news is definitely a blow to Ukraine and its squeaky-clean image often portrayed in the mainstream media.
After all, if Russia is so bad, then why are 99 percent of Ukrainian people in certain areas want to be Russian citizens? The e-u and the u-s have already called the voting a “sham” and say these regions “will never be recognized” as part of Russian territory. And Kyiv had “every right” to take them back.
