US President Joe Biden has heavily criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn longstanding affirmative action admissions policies used by Harvard college and the University of North Carolina for diversifying their campuses.
According to Biden, this ruling is “not a normal court”, as it has gone against long held precedents, such as the Roe vs. Wade case which established the constitutional right to abortion. Biden urged colleges to continue their commitment to ensure diversity but with new standards for admissions that take into account, adversities students have overcome when selecting among qualified candidates.
The president has also directed the department of education to look into what practices are helpful for creating an inclusive and diverse student body, while at the same time eliminating others like legacy initiatives that disproportionately benefit privileged students.
