In other words, their narrative is slipping away and they’re trying to regain control with a new policy initiative named A Global Digital Compact — an Open, Free and Secure Digital Future for All.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for a code of conduct for governments, tech companies, and advertisers that promotes truth and protects human rights. The Secretary-General’s proposed code of conduct will include commitments to not use, support, or amplify disinformation or hate speech for any purpose. Guterres said he plans to appoint a scientific advisory board in the coming days, and an advisory board on artificial intelligence in September.
The UN chief said the code of conduct will be global and will enable governments, tech companies, advertisers, and others to commit to promoting information integrity in digital platforms. He added that while the code itself won’t necessarily be the solution, it would create a foundation for further action by all involved. He urged governments, tech companies, advertisers, and other stakeholders to come together with a unified commitment towards truth and human rights.
