This is a big deal the king has been recognized by president Cyril Ramaphosa.
It’s the first Zulu coronation since 19-71.
This ceremony honoring the king puts an end to a legal dispute that complicated his succession to the throne. The new king, Misuzulu Kazwelithini has promised to unite his nation and protect tradition. In march 2021, Misuzulu’s father died after reigning as king from 19-71. The coronation recognizes Misuzulu, 48, as the rightful heir after his late father.
Although the title of king does not bestow executive power, the monarchs have great moral influence over more than 11 million Zulus, who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa’s population of 60 million.
