The floods, triggered by severe rainfall, have affected two thirds of Slovenia’s territory, causing an estimated 500 million Euros, or 550 million Dollars, in damage and claiming four lives.
The extensive rainfall, equivalent to a month’s average precipitation falling within a day, led to rapid river swelling, inundating homes, agricultural lands, and towns. Many individuals were evacuated or rescued by emergency services. The Slovenian army is assisting in relief efforts, particularly in the north.
The country has also experienced several severe storms earlier in the summer causing further damage. This event is another in a series of extreme weather phenomena across Europe, with neighbouring Austria also reporting flash floods.
