Many of these individuals have been detained for years and are now confronted with new challenges as they try to reintegrate into society.
The abrupt freedom has led to both joy and fear among those released, as they cope with the uncertainty of their new status. The Australian government has issued these individuals with restrictive visas with as many as 18 conditions attached, including reporting requirements and limitations on the type of work they can undertake.
The prolonged detainment has led to severed family ties, lost income, missed educational opportunities, and diminished future prospects for these individuals. Many of them are also dealing with mental health issues as a result of the lengthy detention, making job hunting and retention a challenge.
