The umbrella federation BEUC and 13 other consumer groups have lodged a complaint with the European Commission and a network of consumer protection authorities.
They allege these companies’ including Coca Cola, Danone and Nestle, claims of “100 Percent Recyclable” or “100 Percent Recycled” packaging mislead consumers as only about 30 percent of pet bottles are recycled into new bottles and the bottle lids and labels are rarely made from recycled material.
The groups are calling for an end to such claims, which they argue give a false impression of environmental positivity. This impacts consumers’ ability to make informed and environmentally conscious purchases.
