Bangladesh police clashed with supporters of the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, BNP, over the weekend in the country’s capital Dhaka.
The BNP is accusing current prime minister Sheikh Hasina of election rigging in 2018. The party is demanding her resignation and the temporary transfer of power to a neutral caretaker government until the next general elections, expected in early January. The situation escalated on Saturday, with hundreds of BNP activists attempting to barricade Dhaka’s entry points.
Police responded with tear gas and baton charges, leading to violent clashes between the opposition supporters and law enforcement. The BNP says more than 100 of its members were injured, with police arresting at least 124. Dhaka metropolitan police, on the other hand, report that they made at least 90 arrests and suffered 20 of their officers injured.
