Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, or RAAC concrete is used in public buildings such as hospitals, courts, and over 100 schools and colleges.
It’s lead to partial or full closures out of safety concerns. UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt says that the issue is being addressed swiftly and funding has been prioritized for necessary reparations. Despite backlash from parents and opposition parties over potential school closures, Hunt and other government personnel have defended the government’s proactive response, including immediate action on any identified risks.
Schools affected by the RAAC issue have been advised to use nearby facilities while risk mitigation structures are installed. The crisis has intensified calls from labour for the government to fully disclose the impact of the situation.
