Tropical cyclone Freddy caused widespread devastation and it’s already killed more than 200 people in the areas of Malawi and Mozambique.
The heavy rains triggered floods and mudslides. The president of Malawi has declared a state of disaster in the southern region and in the country’s capital. Power and communications are down in many of the affected areas which is hindering the ability to help provide aid to the people. About 19 thousand Malawians have been displaced.
Reports from Mozambique indicate the cyclone has already destroyed 19 hundred homes. Tens of thousands of people are still held up in storm shelters and accommodation centers. Cyclone Freddy is expected to stay in central Mozambique and southern Malawi with extreme rainfall before it exits back to the sea late this afternoon.
