The referendum will ask Australians if they support a change to the constitution that creates a committee to provide advice to parliament on matters affecting indigenous Australians.
This would give aboriginals a voice in national policymaking. In the Senate, Upper House of Parliament, 52 members voted in favor of the bill while 19 voted against. He has yet to set a date for the referendum, but it is expected to take place before the end of the year. About three percent of Australia’s population of around twenty-six million people are aboriginal Australians, yet they make up more than a quarter of its prison population. Around one-third live below the poverty line and many were killed after Britain arrived in Australia and took control of the land.
