A tragic event in the Indian state of Gujarat yesterday.
A newly renovated pedestrian suspension bridge collapsed. It happened around 6:30 pm local time. There was overcrowding on the bridge as people gathered to celebrate the Diwali festival, also known as the festival of lights. It’s the most awaited and the most celebrated festival of India.
The Morbi bridge had been reopened just a week ago after repairs.
More than 177 people have been rescued from the collapsed bridge, but many people are still missing, possibly as many as 140-people have not yet been found. A local official said most of those who had died were women, children, or the elderly.
