The interest in news has dropped from 63 percent in 2017 to 47 percent today.
In the US, these numbers are even lower. Additionally, 36 percent of people worldwide admit to avoiding news items often or sometimes. The report also suggests that audiences are avoiding stories such as the war in Ukraine and the cost-of-living crisis, potentially because of information overload. Traditional TV and print news media are continuing to decline while online consumers are accessing news less frequently.
40 percent of those surveyed trust most news most of the time, a two-percentage point decrease from the previous year. In terms of social media platforms, Facebook is still the primary source for consuming news, though its usage has decreased from 42 percent to 28 percent. Instagram and TikTok have seen increases in use with 14 percent of people using Instagram for news and 6 percent using TikTok.
